Presentation

Antonio Saura is a Spanish writer and painter, born in 1930.

He started painting at an early age, in 1947, while he was convalescent while fighting with tuberculosis, a disease that kept him immobile for more than 5 years. Antonio Saura started his artistic carrier in Madrid, and in 1953 he began spending long periods in Paris.

Initially attracted by surrealism, Antonio turned finally to what we call Baroque abstraction, which was a main characteristic of the Spanish group known as "El Paso", of which he was one of the founding members. A change took place in his use of color as well, he went from being very expressive in his use of colors in his early paintings and ultimately evolved towards a practically monochromatic style of painting with particular emphasis on grey.

Antonio Saura designed theater sets as well, for pieces such as "The House of Bernarda Alba" in 1963 and the opera "Carmen" directed by his brother.

Antonio Saura died in 1998 in the city of Cuenca.
