Presentation

“Naive" in essence, created in the apparent simplicity of lines, the style of Jose Sabóia defies the categorical definitions, into thinking in terms ranging from figurative to expressionism.

His compositions, based on repetition and multiplication of expressive and almost identical faces, as if replicating the perplexity of the human face of their destiny, do not steal a touch of humor by depicting  the exuberance of the forms of his people. The shapes generous cause a nice visual effect in that mass movement and present an aesthetic and perhaps ethical impact. Within each painting, the human being takes his place and is enhanced by selective use of color, only three or four dominant colors, and that´s all. Sabóia surprise even more when fixes in the spaciousness of the canvas only one of his personage, or a small group of them. Caught in the stillness of the gesture, the figures take on a new dimension and suggest, paradoxically, a movement in perfect balance. The figures of Jose Sabóia, unmistakable and charismatic, bear the stamp of originality of its creator.
